 About Montessori Elementary

Montessori Elementary School of Chico began in 1987, (previously known as Montessori Children’s Center). The school was founded to provide quality education within the context of mutual joy and respect. In 2007 our school transitioned from 20 years of private ownership to become a 501-(c) 3 non-profit organization, though our mission remains unaltered.

For the past few years, the Upper Elementary students have participated in a week-long environmental camp.

The Montessori Elementary School program is for children in grades Kindergarten through 7th grade. Our curriculum provides a strong basis in the traditional academic areas of Math, Reading, Spelling, Handwriting, and Language Arts. We also have a rich curriculum in Botany, Zoology, History, Geography, Geometry, Music, Drama, Art, and Spanish. Our Physical Education program includes group games, sports, and the annual Olympics. Frequent field trips to Chico Performances and other cultural events complement what we are learning in the classroom.  With a Student : Teacher ratio of 11:1, each child receives individualized attention.

Our school day begins at 8:30 AM and ends at 3:00 PM, with an approximately one hour lunch/play period. We also offer a kindergarten program from 8:30-11:30 with an optional one-hour lunch period from 11:30-12:30.

Each day a large block of time is devoted to individual work.  Another part of the day is set aside for silent reading, group reading, circle time and practical life activities. We offer before and after school care for an additional fee.

All head teachers at Montessori Elementary School have been trained at accredited Montessori training institutions. The environment at Montessori Elementary School is designed to Maria Montessori’s standards to be pleasant, stimulating, and size-appropriate for children. Respectful and honest behavior is expected by children and adults alike.
